Apiary Notes – from Jeremy, Apiaries Manager
As May ends and meteorological summer begins, here are a few notes to keep in mind:
- Brood boxes are unusually full of stored pollen due to strong spring forage. This isn’t a problem by itself but could reduce space for the queen to lay.
- Blackberry is flowering early, which may mean good honey potential — ensure you have enough supers in place.
- Be alert for a possible “June Gap” and monitor stores. Full hives can consume stores quickly.
- Maintain 5-day inspection cycles; 7 days is too long during swarm season.
- The KBKA apiary and honey kitchen at Bishops Cannings are available for all members. There’s always something new to learn or share.
Education
KBKA runs two to four Beginners’ Courses each year (typically in February, May, and July). Topics include:
- Honeybee biology
- Hive products and honey extraction
- Siting and managing an apiary
- Hands-on sessions at the KBKA apiary
Interactive tools like lifecycle models help bring the theory to life. All beginners are also encouraged to attend the fortnightly Open Apiary sessions.
