Chairman Letter – Jan 2017

Dear Kennet Beekeeper

May I start by wishing all our members a Happy New Year and a great beekeeping season 2017 – may your Queens be prolific and your Bees be good tempered.  I would also like to welcome all new members to KBKA and hope that your all get real benefit and enjoyment from being a member of this association.

Tomorrow, 31 December at 11.00 at the Apiary, (The Old Farm Yard Apiary, off the Horton Road nearest post code SN10 2JW or Grid Ref:- SU03246312) we have our last event of 2016, really a most important preparation for 2017 when we trickle oxalic acid on to the clustering bees to really knock down the varroa mite.  This year, with this current cold spell, even the weather is good as the bees should be well clustered.  All are welcome and to make it a little fun we have called the event on Saturday 31st December at 11.00 am. New Years Eve at the Apiary Mulled wine, mince pies and oxalic acid. Those who do turn up remember that the mulled wine and mince pies are up to you!  I would suggest you bring a bee suit as yesterday I got stung by a very annoyed bee while doing my colonies.

For the New Year the KBKA website has been completely rebuilt and our new webmaster Sian Morgan and the committee would like to have some feedback from you, hopefully favourable, as to how well you think it works and looks.  The website is just at its new first viewing stage and no doubt there will be some changes and additions during the year.  Please go to it now https://www.kennet-beekeepers.co.uk and have a look and get to know it. I know you would all like me to thank Sian for all the hard work she has put into this.

Next Friday 6 January at 7.30 is our first club meeting of the year at Bishop Cannings Village Hall SN10 2LA.  It will be very informal and I will chair a general  Beekeeping Discussion evening.  I hope that you will bring your beekeeping questions, worries about your bees etc. and share them with us all.
