Chairmans Letter – October 2019

Dear Kennet Beekeeper,

On Wednesday 2nd October, at Bishops Cannings Village Hall SN10 2LA at 7.30 is our AGM and Kennet BKA Honey Show. This is the time you can put your self up for one of our offices or have yourself proposed to become Chairman – I have done it for far, far too long – I will have to retire in the next few years!

I hear that on BBC Wiltshire’s Wild About Wiltshire until Wednesday 25th September, split into two reports on at 7.10pm and then at 09.10pm will be a bit about the WBKA Bee and Honey day. You might care to listen.

It is also the start of the beekeeping year, when most bee clubs start their years membership. You certainly get the best value for money if you join or rejoin now, at the beginning of October.

There also seems to be tons of emails about honey shows, newsletters from the BBKA and the WBKA AGM and WBKA Bee and Honey day in Devizes on 5 October. So members do not get too many emails I am tending to group them all together and attach them to my monthly Chairman’s letter. It can be hard to decide what is important to send on to the KBKA membership – I often feel there is far too much. So attached to this email is:-

BBKA> Email from Leigh Sidaway has newsletter from Margaret Wilson
Bees for Development> From our last speaker.
Wiltshire BKA> Revised WBHD Show Schedule final
Wiltshire BKA> AGM and last years minutes.
Wiltshire BKA> Yet more about the Honey Show.

There has been much discussion between us and the other associations that make up Wiltshire BKA about registering for Gift Aid. So far, we are in discussions only, and my feeling is that if we register for Gift Aid under Wiltshire BKA we will lose some independence as our money, bank account, equipment and all we do might come under the jurisdiction of WBKA. I would be in favour of our registering for Gift Aid under our own name and keeping KBKA as a totally independent Association. If you feel strongly about this do let me know – I need to know what the membership feels.

In Autumn our secretary Elaine is looking at setting up a Wax Workshop run jointly with Melksham BKA, to cover the basics of working with wax. This will be on a first come first served basis – you need to contact Elaine now on email:- Elainelewis@hotmail.co.uk if you are interested.

Our education secretary Dick Church has sadly suffered a stroke and I am sure you will all join me in wishing him and his family, all the best for his speedy recovery.

I hardly dare remind you, again, of our KBKA Honey Show and Annual General Meeting after my complaints that there are too many email. But I shall hope that a large number of you turn up on 2 October, especially for the AGM, as that is when you can voice your ideas and suggestions about the way your committee is taking KBKA.

With best wishes,

Robert Carpenter Turner
