Chariman’s Letter – May 2024

Dear Kennet BeeKeeper,

Our next talk this coming Wednesday 1st May at Bishop Cannings village hall starting at 7:30 pm, is slightly different as we have a talk by Carrie Pakenham on “Herbs with bees in mind”. Carrie is a member of the Herb Society and will bring their magazine and cards should anyone be anyone interested. For the past four years, she has made the hanging baskets for the Herb Society at Hampton Court and the Chelsea Flower Show. She also has run a small business Green Man selling all sorts of plants, particularly herbs.  Carrie began life in fashion at Christian Dior and was always interested in wildflowers, their history, and cooking with them.  For the past 15 years, she has also been a guide at Highgrove.   Carrie is the author of ‘Making Jellied Preserves’ from Garden and Hedgerow and will talk about pollination and the importance of bees but mostly about the history, growing and cooking of herbs. For this talk, she will be bringing a collection of herbs and some help for her unloading her car would be appreciated.  I think this talk will be particularly of interest to all the gardeners we have in KBKA,  but do please remember that you are welcome to bring your gardening friends who may well also enjoy this talk.

Just a reminder that the Apiary is open as follows:-

Sunday 5th May  1.30 – 4.00 pm.

Sunday 19th May 1.30 – 4.00 pm.

Sunday 2nd June 1.30 – 4.00 pm.

If you have not been to the Apiary you are all welcome as KBKA members.  There are always jobs to be done and Jeremy, our Apiary manager, will always be glad of an experienced hand to help.

At the bottom of this email, I include a request for someone to become South West Beekeepers Forum secretary, but I think it is far more important that someone stands up and offers to become our KBKA Chair or our Treasurer when we both retire at the end of this season.  Could that be YOU?  I am hoping to hear from you now !!!!

All best wishes

Robert
